Description
Front elevation of 88 Dean Street, Soho. Grade II listed, entry number 1066920. A three-storey house and shop, built in 1791 and with the original shop front with two slightly projecting bay windows. The first-floor sash windows have uniform patterned window boxes and there are mansard windows in the roof. The central glazed double doors have the name 'Rippon' above them, with a bracket light, whilst the bays have 'Stationer &', and 'Newsagent' above each. The windows are full of various newspapers, magazines, jars of sweets and on the glass are adverts for 'Wills's Gold Flake Cigarettes' and 'Bournville Chocolate'. To the left is a solid front door with a skylight above and the number '88'. A gas street light is between numbers 88 and 87. The latter is a tobacconists with a projecting oval sign for 'Wills's Gold Flake Cigarettes' [again!] and a larger lit sign for 'Ladies and Gents Hairdressers', whose 'Salon' was on the first-floor. There is also a painted 'barber's pole'. The roof and mansard window of number 87 is covered by plastic sheeting.
