Description
Exterior elevation of G. Bates' Advertising & News Agent premises at 14, Broadway, now Ludgate Broadway, south of Ludgate Hill, EC4. Number 14 also housed the oyster bar shown on the right of the photograph, and stood at the northeast corner of Broadway at the junction with Pilgrim Street. The front of the premises is covered with advertising boards for both businesses and prints and publications for sale in Bates' shop. A group of middle aged and elderly men with a boy pose for the photographer on the pavement outside. Information in manuscript on reverse of the photograph reads: 'Farringdon Within [Ward] Broadway, Ludgate Hill. View of 14, Broadway, 1884 (about Easter) occupied by George Bates, newsvendor and Ullmann, Maximillian, fishmonger. See P.O. [Post Office] Directory 1884 and earlier. Premises pulled down in 1884. George Bates removed to no. 8, Broadway...' The 1885 Post Office Directory confirms that George Bates moved to number 8, but the text inaccurately says that this was opposite number 14 when in fact it stood on the south-east corner of Broadway at the junction with Carter Lane.
