Description
A view of the front elevations of the Black Cap pub and shops, with accommodation above, at 167-175 (odd) Camden High Street, Camden Town. To the left of the pub is True-Form shoe shop at 167-169 and to its right, a branch of Boots the Chemist at 173-175. The Black Cap at number 171 dates from the 1880 and features a bust of Mother Black Cap at the apex of the facade in a niche. It closed in 2015. In the later twentieth century it had been well known for its drag queen cabaret with an audience said to include celebrities like Barry Humphries, Barry Cryer and Charles Hawtrey. It was also a haunt of Dennis Nilsen, the serial killer. The pub name derives from a local legend concerning a witch. The Black Cap is the subject of certificate of immunity from the government number 1449431 stating that it will not be listed at least until 20 September 2022. All the buildings still exist.
