Description
Looking north along Newington Butts towards Elephant and Castle. The street is busy with pedestrians and traffic, with numerous billboards and posters on buildings, notably one advertising a John Wayne film, "The Searchers". To the left is St Gabriel Street and beyond that a school and the ruined building of the Metropolitan Tabernacle. A public house, Alfred's Head, is visible at the far end of Newington Butts and in the distance, the dome of St Paul's Cathedral and the chimney of Bankside Power Station. The Elephant and Castle was redeveloped post World War II and almost none of these buildings remain, with the exception of the Metropolitan Tabernacle, rebuilt in 1957, which is a Grade II listed building, list entry number 1385730.
