View along Newington Causeway looking north from Elephant and Castle. In the foreground is a manned police box controlling traffic, with a drinking fountain and public toilets behind. Either side of the road are areas of waste ground being used for parking and billboard posters. These variously advertise Johnny Walker Whisky, Polo Mints, Coca-Cola, Ben Truman Beer, Canada Dry mixers and C.W.S (Co-operative Wholesale Society). Newington Causeway is busy with pedestrians and traffic, including a number of Routemaster buses. A corner of the Alfred's Head public house is just visible on the left, and beyond, four-storey terraced nineteenth-century housing in Skipton Street. In the far distance the dome of St Paul's Cathedral and the chimney of Bankside Power Station are visible. The Elephant and Castle has undergone extensive redevelopment and Newington Causeway is now lined with multi-storey blocks. Skipton House was built on the waste ground to the left and occupied by the Department of Health in 1993, and is still extant.
