View of Newington Butts looking south at Elephant and Castle and St George's Road. A line of traffic waits as pedestrians cross and traffic controls are evident, including lights, indicating Elephant and Castle as a major junction. On the left the portico and shell of the Metropolitan Tabernacle are visible, and to its right the rear elevations of nineteenth-century terraced housing on Pastor Street. Apart from the Metropolitan Tabernacle none of these buildings or roads remain, as the Elephant and Castle has undergone continuous redevelopment since the 1960s, including two roundabouts to regulate traffic flow. The London College of Communication was built in 1964 on the empty land to the right of the Tabernacle, whilst on its left a 37-storey residential block, One The Elephant, was built in 2016. The Metropolitan Tabernacle is a Grade II listed building, list entry number 1385730.
