View of Newington Butts looking north towards Elephant and Castle. On the left is the ruined building of the Metropolitan Tabernacle which was hit by World War II bombing. The classical portico survived intact but the building is a shell and the perimeter secured with a wire fence. A build up of traffic, including multiple Routemaster buses, is visible at the Elephant and Castle junction. Beyond this is Burton's store, built in the 1930s and to its right, the Elephant and Castle Undergound Station and Alfred's Head, a public house. The Elephant and Castle has undergone continuous redevelopment since the 1960s and almost none of these buildings remain, with the exception of the the Underground Station built in 1906 and the Metropolitan Tabernacle, rebuilt in 1957; it is Grade II listed building, list entry number 1385730.
