View of shops at 18-26 Borough High Street, Southwark, on the corner with Bedale Street. This runs along the side of Borough Market which has been on its current site since 1215. A four-storey terrace with shop fronts on the ground floor including number 26 with shop sign W. H. DORSETT & Co. Ltd with a shuttered shop front. The company, based at Spitalfields Market, was bought by Walter Dorsett in 1910 from Mr T. Mills who had farms in Barking and brought produce to market. In 1936 his son Wally started a business in Borough Market, but during World War II, moved to Wisbech and sold his company to his partner Mr Jack Lang. The company eventually closed in 1980. Another shop sign for HOWARD CHAPMAN Ltd; retailer of fruit and vegetables, which continues to trade. A stack of vegetable boxes are on the corner of the street. Number 24 with shop sign BEESONS and WISKAR Ltd, and a sign on the first floor W.BEESON, (LONDON and DUNBAR) Ltd. A potato supplier, the company ceased trading in 2010. Number 22 with shop sign L. E. PEARCE Ltd above a shuttered shop front. On the first floor is a sign for EDWIN HILL and PARTNERS CHARTERED SURVEYORS with telephone number HOP 2794/5. The London telephone exchanges all had names prior to the numerical system introduced in 1968, and Southwark was known simply as HOP due to the number of hop merchants in the area. Number 20 has a shop sign for W & A CHAPMAN (FRUIT SALESMEN) Ltd. These buildings were demolished and a new railway viaduct built over the site for the Thameslink Project. Under the viaduct now is a glass-enclosed extension to Borough Market; the Borough Market Hall. A number of vehicles and pedestrians are in the street, and a policemen directs the traffic in front of the railway viaduct crossing Borough High Street. It was constructed in 1864 and links London Bridge to Waterloo and to Cannon Steet.
