View looking north up Davenant Street (formerly St Mary Street), Whitechapel, taken from Whitechapel Road. The National School of 1813-15 (Whitechapel Society’s School, St Mary’s School or St Mary Street School) with its bell tower can be seen in the background on the right-hand side of the road. It closed in 1939 and was demolished in 1975. Number 151 Whitechapel Road is the building on the right-hand corner in the foreground. Built on the site of Whitechapel almshouses in 1860-62, it is all that survives of what was an imposing row of thirteen shophouses. The restrooms for a garage can been seen on the opposite corner; built in 1952, it is still a garage. The building behind the garage has the lettering Mornessa on it and a sign for A & T Newman Ltd Ladies' Coats & Suits. Cars are parked up on the pavements on both sides of the road.
