A view of the back yard of the Poplar Flock Mills factory at 171-185 Hackney Road, Haggerston. The wall on the left supports pipework, an electrical control box with two buttons, a metal rack holding cylinders and two pipes that cross the yard. To the right is a single-storey building with an indistinct nineteenth-century date scratched on the brickwork. Wooden boxes can be seen stacked inside, the roof supports a tank, and a lagged pipe extends to the building opposite. In the centre of the photo a metal staircase leads off to the left, beneath which an oil drum and a trolley can be seen. A suspended metal walkway with railings connects the right-hand building to one in the background above which a chimney rises. There is a bicycle behind the open metal door of the building on the right. A ramp leads to two more sets of internal doors. Above the open metal doors is a no-smoking sign and an electric klaxon. The opening on the far right is shut off by a tall metal shutter, the machinery in the bottom corner bears a plate with the words Aero Lift. These buildings were demolished and replaced in the 1970s by social housing, the Fellows Court Estate.
