Description
A view of the front elevations of 229-243 Hackney Road, Haggerston, between Scawfell Street and Queensbridge Road. Numbers 229, 231, 237-241 are flat-fronted four-storey houses with basements and front gardens. Numbers 233 and 235 are similar but have only three-storeys and the front gardens are taken up with single-storey extensions and number 235 is the premises of J. Mathias Ltd suppliers of chipboard, plywood and plastic. Above the first-floor window of number 237 is a sign for Designed Plastercraft Associates; the building has metal railings and a To Let sign bearing the name Marcus King & Co estate agents. A Ford Cortina Estate car is parked in front of number 239. Number 241 has a low brick wall surmounted by a wooden fence and metal railings, there is a pile of bricks in the front garden. There is a large London Plane tree behind a breeze block and brick wall in the front garden of number 243, which is a two-storey building. A K2 type telephone box on Queensbridge Road can be seen on the right; it was Grade II listed in 1987, listing number 1235561. The ground-floor extension of 235 Hackney Road is no longer there, but all the other buildings and the Plane tree still stand. The traffic lights on the right of the photo have been removed.
