Description
Accumulator tower on two levels, one- and two-storey, at the top of Shadwell Dock Stairs and the junction of Labour In Vain Street and Lower Shadwell. It is next to Shadwell Pumping Station in Labour In Vain Street near the entrance to Shadwell Basin. The photo was looking south. There is a street sign saying Shadwell Dock Stairs on the side wall of the tower and a lamp post on the adjoining corner. The tower has several windows, some of which are bricked up or partly bricked up. There is a tall chimney to the right of the tower and a fenced-in enclosure to the left. The tower no longer exists; the site is now part of the Thames Path that runs into King Edward VII Memorial Park, which was Shadwell’s first park, opened in 1922. Shadwell Dock Stairs do still exist and were Grade II listed in 1973, listing number 1065138.
