A view looking east down Bow Road from Mile End Road, Stepney, featuring St Clement's Hospital on the right (with tower). The hospital is Grade II listed (listing number 1251493) and was opened in 1849 as the City of London Union Workhouse and later as the City of London Union Infirmary. It closed in 2005 following a decision to sell the site for redevelopment. This is a busy street scene with horses and carts, motor vehicles and a horse drawn topless double decker bus. A Whitbread Stout sign is visible on the top floor of the Kings Head public house at 8 Bow Road. It was demolished in the 1970s as part of road widening. Arthur Lambert Burton’s Chemist and HW Peel Stationer & Post Office can be seen at 630 and 628 Mile End Road. The building that was Burtons Chemist is now Forward Pharmacy, although now renumbered 648 Mile End Road.
