Rich Street, Limehouse, looking north to the junction of East India Dock Road, West India Dock Road and Commercial Road. In the left foreground is a Sailors’ Home run by the British and Foreign Sailors’ Society. This building is now flats. In the right foreground is the Eastern Hotel, a Truman’s house built in 1860 and visited by the King of Siam and Polish novelist Joseph Conrad. It had a street address of 1 West India Dock Road and a postal address of 2 East India Dock Road. It was renamed The Londoner in the 1960s, Lipstick in the 1990s and demolished in the mid 1990s. The space is now covered by a hoarding. In the background, from right to left, there is a Barclay’s bank at 819 Commercial Road, Boots chemist’s at 817 and two other shops at 815 and 813. Behind the shops is a tall, square chimney. There are three black cabs, two cars, a cyclist and two women pedestrians in the photo. The Barclay’s bank is now (2020) a café, the chemist’s is Nash chemist’s and the shop next to it is the E14 Dental Centre. The next shop is derelict and the tall chimney has been demolished.
