Description
Fireplace of first-floor north room at 21 Spital Square, Spitalfields. A marble fire surround and mantlepiece frame a decorative cast-iron fire insert full of coal. The ornate fire grate has claws at the base. Coal and paper lie on the structural hearth with a marble decorative hearth in front. Spital Square was at the heart of the St John and Tillard estate; a development of grand houses, mostly occupied by silk merchants and master weavers and largely demolished in the 1920s and 1930s.
