Description
A view looking east along Commercial Road, Stepney, taken from outside the Star of the East public house. One of two lamp standards situated outside the pub, displaying the pub name and the Courage Brewery cockerel, can be seen behind scaffolding. These two lamps and the Star of the East public house at number 805 are both Grade II listed; listing number 1240184. Beyond the pub, by a road sign for the A13 Tilbury, are the premises of Francis & Chris Walters Undertakers, at number 811. This building is also Grade II listed; listing number 1357830. There are numerous pedestrians and vehicles including a bus. A public lavatory is located on a traffic island between the east and westbound carriageways. The lavatory no longer exists but the tall post with a ball on top remains. Across the traffic lights at the junction of East India and West India Dock Roads is the Trumans Brewery public house, The Londoner. Originally named The Eastern Hotel, it was built in 1860, renamed The Londoner in the 1960s, and then Lipstick in the early 1990s. It was demolished in the mid 1990s when the road junction was widened. The demolished building is currently surrounded by hoarding painted to resemble a building.
