A busy street scene looking east along Commercial Road, Stepney, with numerous pedestrians, handcarts, horse-drawn carts and wagons, and a horse-drawn tram travelling west along the tram lines that run the length of Commercial Road. This photograph was taken on the north side of the road, just west of what was Plumbers Row. The Duke of Clarence public house at number 71 Commercial Road, at the corner of Greenfield Street (latterly Road), can be seen on the left. Just before this is an entrance to what was Haymarket Yard. The buildings in this terrace, up to The Duke of Clarence, were the site of the present day Former London Metropolitan University Building. Plumbers Row has been truncated, no longer adjoining Commercial Road, and Haymarket Yard no longer exists. Just visible in the foreground on the south side of the road is a letterbox which stood on the corner of Berner Street (latterly Henriques Street).
