Staircase in Michael Angelo Taylor's House, 1 Horse Guards Avenue, Westminster. The main staircase has a delicate iron balustrade with a mahogany handrail, and continues in a semicircular sweep to each floor with a series of radiating steps. The stone treads are moulded, with shaped outer ends, which continue through to the supporting wall, forming a moulded soffit. A decorated band continues around the wall at the floor level. The house was built by architect Robert Taylor for his son in 1793. Michael Angelo Taylor was a politician, chiefly known in connection with the Metropolitan Paving Act of 1817, which is still referred to as "Michael Angelo Taylor's Act."
