Description
A detail view of Victoria Fountain, Wanstead, Redbridge, which was erected in 1897 to Queen Victoria to commemorate her Diamond Jubilee. Originally this fountain was at the centre of the junction. Road widening schemes have caused it to be moved a number of times; it currently sits on top of the A12 underpass opposite Wanstead Underground Station. It has a medallion bust on the brick gable, various inscriptions, one in Latin, a drinking fountain and basin below an arch, an animal drinking trough on the opposite side, and a wrought iron structure in the centre. A Volkswagen Beetle can be seen in the background waiting by traffic lights. The building seen in the background used to house the former Kinema, and was used as a bingo hall from 1968.
