Description
Number 5 Hill Street is an early-eighteenth century three-storey house in the Central Richmond Conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. It was Grade II listed in 1979; listing number: 1065435. From 1914 it served as the frontage for a cinema auditorium built to the rear, originally known as The New Royalty Kinema, and became The Gaumont in 1949, retaining the name until it closed in 1980. The auditorium was demolished and rebuilt as the Filmhouse with a new frontage on Water Lane, now the Curzon Richmond. The house retains many original features, including a full-height balustraded staircase, panelling, and some original fireplaces. The cellar is currently occupied by the Richmond Vault beer cellar, and the upper floors by a private dental practice. This view from the staircase shows part of the stairwell and what is believed to be the first- and second-floor landings. The walls have traditional timber panelling, and the balustrade has corkscrew shaped spindles.
