Description
"The civic contest"; shows Lawrence (left) and Besley (right), the rival candidates for the Mayoral election of 1869, depicted as knights jousting on Holborn Viaduct. They are on horseback, in armour, and bear soup tureens as helmets and turtle-shells as shields. To right and left two turtles dressed as heralds sound a trumpet-call.
