London Metropolitan Archives: Baddeley Collection
An illustration from J.J. Baddeley’s Cripplegate Ward (1921), showing the west end of Fore Street with the north wall and tower of St Giles, Cripplegate, City of London. Baddeley writes that the church wall had only been visible since 1902, following the demolition of the Quest House (Common Hall), ‘the four shoppes’ and the gateway to the churchyard. In the foreground left is the Somerset Arms, 7 Fore Street, with Somerset Chambers above. The statue of John Milton stands opposite the tower. In the foreground right, on the southwest corner of Whitecross Street, are the premises of the National Provincial and Union Bank of England.
