"Banyan Day, or a gloomy 9th of November"; shows William Curtis depicted as a sailor. His nose is red and he weeps while his mouth waters as he thinks of the food and items which will not be present. Banyan (or Banian) Day was a sea term for a meatless day and is though to originate from the East Indies, referring to Hindu traders.
