At Stafford Street: experimental locomotive at entrance to tunnel, Stafford Street. This engine was designed by the Metropolitan Railway's chief engineer, John Fowler. It was meant to reduce emissions in tunnels by generating and re-using steam using stored heat from fire bricks. The prototype proved unsuccessful but gained the nickname 'Fowler's Ghost'. Workmen and men in top hats are gathered around the rear of the locomotive and there are spectators on the bridge above.
