Richard Burbage (1568-1619) was the son of James Burbage the theatre impresario who built The Theatre in Shoreditch, and the leading actor in William Shakespeare's company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men. He is believed to be the first actor to play some of Shakespeare's most celebrated roles, including Hamlet, King Lear, Othello and Richard III. Along with his brother Cuthbert, Richard is believed to have played a key role in relocating The Theatre to Bankside and recreating it as The Globe. Taken from the original picture in Dulwich College which was created in the late 16th century.
