Description
This playbill features a production of William Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice at the Theatre Royal, Sadler's Wells in September 1849 under the management of Samuel Phelps (1804-1878). Phelps, appearing as Shylock in this production, has been credited with revolutionising performances of Shakespeare's plays during the 19th century by restoring the original text of the first folio. The playbill notes that The Tempest and Measure for Measure were also being performed at the theatre at the time, while Anthony and Cleopatra was 'coming soon'.
