A view of Ludgate Circus from Fleet Street, City of London. The street is crowded with motorised omnibuses and other vehicles, both motorised and horse-drawn. The block on the right houses the Punch Tavern, as well as other shops and and offices. On the facade is an advert for Smith's Advertising Agency. The whole block was rebuilt from 1894-1897 and was Grade II listed in 1996; listing number 1268142. On the other side of Ludgate Circus is a building with adverts on the facade for Bovril and Schweppes Ginger Ale. In front of it stands an obelisk, erected in 1775 in memory of John Wilkes, a former Lord Mayor of the City. It was removed in 1950. The Ludgate Hill Viaduct was constructed in 1865 by the London, Chatham & Dover Railway. The bridge was demolished in 1990. Beyond that is the tower of St Martin's church, behind which is the dome of St Paul's Cathedral.
