Description
A view of Ludgate Hill from Ludgate Circus, City of London. On the left is the King Lud pub, built in 1870 and closed in 2005. On the right stands an obelisk, erected in 1775 in memory of John Wilkes, a former Lord Mayor of the City. It was removed in 1950. A number of horse-drawn vehicles are passing under Ludgate Hill Viaduct, which was constructed in 1865 by the London, Chatham & Dover Railway. The bridge was demolished in 1990. Beyond the bridge is the Cafe de Paris, an elegant restaurant opened by Spiers & Pond in 1866. It was sold to J. Lyons in 1905. In the distance is the tower of St Martin's church.
