View of police officers standing amongst debris after a Fenian bomb explosion in Corporation Row in December 1867. The bomb was intended to demolish a wall of the House of Detention in Clerkenwell to allow a Fenian member being held there to escape. At least six people were killed and many buildings were damaged. it was reported at the time as 'The Clerkenwell Outrage'.
The Fenian Movement was formed in 1858 in the U.S.A. and dedicated to gaining independence for Ireland from British rule.
