Description
View of the Lion Brewery on Belvedere Road, South Bank, showing an archway flanked with pilasters and pedestrian entrances. The archway is topped with a sign saying 'brewery' and a Coade stone lion by W.F. Woodington. On either side of the archway are two-storey brick buildings with classical features. The main building with a clock can be seen in the background. Also known as the Red Lion Brewery, the building was designed by Francis Edwards, and built in 1836 by James Goding. The Lion Brewey Company had been taken over by Hoare & Co. four years before this photograph was taken and continued to produce beer until a fire in 1931. The building then remained derelict until it was demolished in 1949 to make way for the construction of the Royal Festival Hall. The lion is now presumed missing.
