Pedestrian subway under Westminster Bridge Road, Lambeth, on the south side by the junction with Lambeth Palace Road. A man with a newspaper has walked down the ramp from Westminster Bridge in the direction of the sign to St Thomas' Hospital. A woman walks in the direction of the signs to Waterloo Station, County Hall, Lying In Hospital and South Bank Arts Centre. In the opposite direction is a sign to Westminster Bridge Road and Lambeth Palace Road East. Two Routemaster buses are heading west on the road and another, east from Westminster Bridge. In the background is the six-storey South Block of County Hall built by Higgs and Hill between 1936 and 1939 as an addition to the main County Hall which had opened in 1922 as the headquarters of the London County Council, later the Greater London Council. The Greater London Council was abolished in 1986 and the building is now used for exhibitions and tourist attractions, restaurants and a hotel.
