Description
View of Webber Street, Waterloo, looking south-east from The Cut (formerly New Cut). On the corner of The Cut and Webber Street two K2 telephone boxes designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Behind them the rear aspect of two three-storey tenement blocks, 151-166 Mitre Road. On the opposite corner a three-storey tenement no 1-6 Mitre Road, adjacent to 1-6 Webber Road with a lorry parked on the road. These buildings remain. In the centre of the road an underground public convenience. Right, the side wall of the Old Vic Theatre. First built in 1818 as the Royal Coburg Theatre; was renamed in 1833 as the Royal Victoria Theatre. It was rebuilt in 1871 by J T Robinson and reopened as the Royal Victoria Palace. It was remodelled by Elijah Hoole in 1880 and its name changed again to the Royal Victoria Hall although by this time it was known as 'The Old Vic'. It was badly damaged during the Second World War and reopened after restoration by Pierre Sonrel in 1951. Old Vic Theatre Grade II* listed no 1068710.
