Title
Pawn brokers in Poplar High Street
Description
View of a shop at 284-286 Poplar High Street, Poplar, looking south-west at the corner of Preston's Road. On the corner of the building is the entrance to the shop with a clock above the door indicating it is 10.35 in the morning. A stack of travelling cases is visible in the doorway and musical instruments, paintings and ornaments can be seen in the windows. The windows on either side of the door are illuminated by two lamps hanging from ornate wrought iron brackets above. Down Preston's Road appears to be the side entrance to the pawnbrokers beneath a typical three balls sign. The pawnbrokers was founded by Benjamin Gosling Blackmore in the 1880s and was later run by his son, Benjamin James Blackmore. On the right is a partial view of what appears to be a china shop at 282 Poplar High Street. Two men lean against a street bollard and women cross the cobbled street with children. The building was severely damaged by bombing in the second World War and the business ceased trading. The premises were finally demolished in the late 1960s and a tower block with shops at street level was built.
