Title
Swing bridge on Preston's Road
Description
General view of Preston's Road, Poplar, looking north towards the bridge over the Blackwall entrance lock to the West India Docks. The street is cobbled and on the left are brick and wood warehouses of Graving Wharf with an ornate cast iron street lamp. Groups of men some in suits, neck ties and hats walk towards the photographer. Other men wear jackets and flat caps and two men are pulling a wooden, two-wheel hand cart next to a man riding a bicycle. In 1987 the middle lock gates were removed and the entrance lock dammed and not long afterwards the bridge was removed and Preston’s Road was broadened and straightened.
