View of Cumberland Market
Description
A view across Cumberland Market, Regent's Park, to the west end of the north side of the square. The photograph dates from around the time of the decline of the square as a hay and straw market. The cobbled surface of the market square is visible and a line of posts mark a roadway across the square. A man is seen at the left wearing a bowler hat and apron and standing outside the British Queen pub at number 44. To its right are three-storey terraced homes and then Nickolls & Baker Hay Compressors. A sign reading Corn Merchants Newcastle Wharf is visible over a vehicle entrance. At the right is J. & A. Crew stone, marble, granite and slate works, a three-storey building with stucco covered ground floor. The market functioned for a century until the late 1920s. The square has been replaced by playing fields, tennis courts and a playground and the buildings have been replaced by local authority housing, the Regent's Park Estate.
