View of Commercial Road
Description
A view looking east along Commercial Road, Stepney, taken from near Philpot Street, dominated by the buildings on the south side of Commercial Road. There is a transit van parked in the foreground on the north side of the road, and a double chainlink railing extends along the pavement. A sign for a BP petrol station is visible further along the street. This petrol station no longer exists and a Holiday Inn now occupies the site. On the south side of Commercial Road The Hungerford Arms public house stands next to the former Baptist Chapel with its grand columned facade and large pediment above. The chapel is seen to be the business premises of I Wasserman & Sons. Beyond this is the courtyard entrance to Blue Star Austin Garage, Warrior public house, The Great Synagogue and Victory public house (on the corner of Watney Street, before realignment). The Hungerford Arms is still in existence. All of the other buildings beyond were demolished as part of the redevelopment of the new Watney Street market complex. Their flattened sites becoming a much widened pavement area. Winterton Street and Planet Street, seen adjoining Commercial Road, ceased to exist following the redevelopment. In 2013 Watney Market Idea Store, 260 Commercial Road, opened on the plot between what was Warrior public house and The Great Synagogue. The terrace of houses seen in the distance, between Deancross Street and Sutton Street still exists. There are various cars, trucks and a bus travelling in both directions along Commercial Road.
