Title
Hungerford Bridge on Victoria Embankment from the south bank
Description
View of Hungerford Bridge, Charing Cross Station and Victoria Embankment, Westminster. A view taken from the south bank on a murky day, showing Charing Cross station and Hungerford Railway Bridge, with semaphore signalling and a gantry signal box across the tracks. The South Eastern and Chatham Railway ran the line from 1899 until 1923, when the Southern Railway took over operating it. The bridge was not strong enough to carry the more powerful steam engines that were being introduced and there was even talk of moving the Charing Cross terminus south of the river and replacing the rail bridge with a new road one. The electrification of the Kent lines, with lighter trains by S. R., in 1926 solved this issue. The large building with the fire escape on the left is the Grade II listed Charing Cross Hotel, listing number 1236707, built in 1863-64. To its left is the spire of St.-Martin-in-the-Fields. Below the bridge is what is called a 'Floating Fire Station' on contemporary OS mapping. In front of this a canal narrowboat fights it way upstream. Empty lighters are moored in the foreground and there is a line of buildings on the west side of The Embankment.
