Title
Monuments in churchyard of St Mary Newington
Description
The Coats of arms on each end of monuments in the churchyard of St Mary Newington. The description on the manuscript is incorrect. On the left shows the coat of arms and crest of John Robson, buried at St. Mary Newington 24th January 1791. On the right is shown the impaled marital coat of arms of Joseph Hetherington (born April 1761) buried at St Mary’s Newington 13th September 1792 and of his wife Elizabeth Enderby (married Christ Church Southwark 1783) daughter of Samuel Enderby, of St Paul’s Wharf, a Whale Oil Merchant who was granted these unusual nautical arms (College of Arms, Grant Books: Vol. XIV, fol. 40 12 August 1778). Az. The mast of a vessel issuant from the base, thereon a sail hoisted and pennant flying ppr. Between two estoiles in fess or, representing the Arctic and Antarctic polar stars. The crest of Robson is repeated incorrectly when it should be the Enderby Crest: A whaling harpooner in the attitude of striking ppr. There are references to Enderby and the company Samuel Enderby & Sons in the novel Moby Dick and in our collections.
