Description
"Meggs' Almshouses. Repaired, improved, and further endowed by Benjamin Goodwin ... " : depicted with a small map underneath. Stepney is now in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

William Meggs' Almshouses stood on the site now occupied by 100 Whitechapel Road on the south side. The almshouses were built and endowed by local resident William Meggs in 1658. They housed twelve Whitechapel parishioners, who were to be single, church-going and over the age of fifty. In 1767 they were repaired, improved and further endowed by Benjamin Goodwin. In 1883 - 84 Meggs’ Almshouses were demolished and replaced by St Mary’s Station on the District and Metropolitan underground lines. The almshouses moved to new buildings in Upton Lane E9. St Mary's station closed in 1938 and the site was bombed during the Second World War. A hotel now occupies the site.
