Title
Playbill for Anthony and Cleopatra
Description
This playbill features a production of William Shakespeare's play Anthony and Cleopatra at the Theatre Royal, Sadler's Wells in October 1849 under the management of Samuel Phelps (1804-1878). Phelps, appearing as Marc Anthony in this production, has been credited with revolutionising performances of Shakespeare's plays during the 19th century by restoring the original text of the first folio. The playbill notes that a new Farce First of May would also be performed, while She Stoops to Conquer by Oliver Goldsmith was to be performed at the weekend. Othello was 'coming soon'.
