Title
Aldersgate Street
Description
Looking east across Aldersgate from the eastern extremity of Bartholomew Close, City of London, roughly along the line of Jewin Street towards Redcross Street Fire Station. The fire station can be seen on the far left, St Giles’ Cripplegate in the centre and 39 Aldersgate on the right, with 40 Aldersgate to its rear. Number 39 is about 20 yards south of the junction of Aldersgate and what used to be Edmund Place (walled off in the picture). At the time of the photograph, the west side of Aldersgate had been entirely cleared between the junctions with Long Lane to the north and Manchester Avenue, which lay roughly opposite Edmund Place. Jewin Street no longer exists; it ran from Aldersgate Street to just north of St Giles Cripplegate where it met Redcross Street. Both Jewin Street and Redcross Street were demolished for the construction of Barbican Centre.
