Winchester House in Old Broad Street
Description
A view of Winchester House at 96-104 Old Broad Street, City of London, during the early stages of demolition. This large building designed by Frederick Thomas Pilkington dating from c1886 stretched from Great Winchester Street to London Wall. The earlier Marquis of Winchester's Winchester House (pre 1572) once stood on the site. On the left hand side by the turning into Great Winchester Street is the building's entrance at 104 Old Broad Street which once led to the Midland Bank Ltd. Above the curved, stepped entrance flanked by classical columns with partially opened sliding metal gates can be seen the words Midland Bank Limited, which is repeated on both the Great Winchester Street and Old Broad Street sides of the building. Winchester House also contained a large number of businesses inluding the Midland Railway Co. of Western Australia Ltd. The building contains elements of the Beau Arts style of architecture such as classical motifs, a style repeated in the adjacent building by Great Winchester Street. The window frames and glass within a number of windows have been removed but a few sash windows remain along with the larger lower ground floor windows. Scaffolding can be seen at the London Wall end of the building. Neighbouring Victorian buildings in Old Broad Street can be seen on the right. Between 1996 and 1999 a large office building (containing ground floor commercial premises) re-namend Winchester House and designed by Swanke Hayden Connell Architects - SHCA was built on the site. On the site of the entrance 104 Old Broad Street was placed a Pret A Manger coffee shop (one of the ground floor commercial premises). Other buildings in the street have been replaced by late 20th century office blocks.
