Title
Inner Temple Gatehouse in Fleet Street
Description
View of the exterior of Inner Temple Gatehouse at 17 Fleet Street, City of London, which was originally built in 1610-11 but very much restored and rebuilt at later dates. This photograph was taken before the false front was removed in 1900, which revealed the seventeenth-century half-timbered front. The false front included eight carved panels. On the ground floor is Carter's hairdressers and a stone archway dated 1748 which leads to Inner Temple. On the first floor is Prince Henry's Room. At the top of the building is a sign which says 'formerly the palace of Henry VIII and Cardinal Wolsey'. Groom's Coffee House at 16 Fleet Street and the entrance to 18 Fleet Street are just visible.
