Hercat, The Mystery of She at the Egyptian Hall
Hercat, (R.D. Chater c.1843-1913) was an illusionist and ventriloquist who published several books on conjuring, mind reading and ventriloquism. 'She' (Ayesha) featured in the popular adventure novel of 1887 by H Rider Haggard about a tribal queen who appeared immortal after passing through a mysterious pillar of fire. Hercat's illusion of a beautiful woman arising from the flames cleverly cashed in on this fame.
