Red Bull Theatre
This issue of 'The Nic Nac or Oracale of Knowledge' from 1823 shows the what is thought to be the stage at the Red Bull Theatre, which operated on the west side of St John Street in Clerkenwell (to the north of the priory, near the junction with Clerkenwell Road today), probably from 1604. Queen Anne's Men performed there on a number of occasions in the Jacobean period. The image was created as the frontispiece of The Wits by Francis Kirkman, published in 1662, and is one of the earliest known illustrations of a theatre interior.
