Title
Italian Hospital and public water pump in Queen Square
Description
A view of the Grade II listed neo-classical Italian Hospital, 40-41 Queen Square, Holborn, and Grade II listed public water pump of 1840 with attached lantern. The Italian Hospital was established in 1884 by Giovanni Battista Ortelli; the bullding was built in c1898 and temporarily closed in 1941. The name of the hospital is etched into the stonework of the building with the hospital's coat of arms above the entrance. The entrance and some of the windows (also at number 37) are covered in possible brick bomb blast protection. On the brick wall in front of the entrance are a number of wartime notices and posters, one of which shows a soldier in a helmet. Two women can be seen looking out of one of the sash windows. In the foreground is the public water pump surmounted by a gas street lamp and surrounded by four bollards. On the right is the National Deposit Friendly Society building of c1920s, at 37 Queen Square. On the right is a metal clad street blockade surmounted by barbed wire. The buildings remain and the Italian Hospital building is now a part of Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.
