Title
Mowbrays bookshop in Margaret Street
Description
A view of the front elevations of the five-storey building at 28 Margaret Street, Fitzrovia. The ground floor is home to Mowbrays Bookshop. A wrought iron hanging shield sign reads A.R. Mowbray & Co., Oxford. Below this is a striped awning over the shop front, with books on display in the window. The ground floor and basement premises that made up Mowbrays was one of the best theological book shops in London and the United Kingdom in the twentieth century. Mowbrays continued at this address and was amalgamated with Hatchards in 2006. This site is no longer a bookshop. Mowbrays was originally an Oxford firm of ecclesiastical furnishers and religious booksellers. The firm was founded by Alfred Richard Mowbray (1824-75). Their making of ecclesiastical fittings was taken over by J. Wippell & Co. in 1969, although the styles of both firms have similarities even in the 1930s.
