Description
Corner of Gray's Inn Road and Ampton Street, King's Cross. The nineteenth-century building at 274 Gray's Inn Road appears to be in poor condition, with cracks to the render, ill-fitting and broken windows and crumbling door surround. Its empty shop window has exposed brick above it, possibly as a result of the removal of a shop fascia. Ladders, plastic sheeting, paving slabs and scaffolding indicate building work in progress. On the opposite side of Gray's Inn Road a Mobil petrol station is visible, and the junction with Ampton Street is controlled with pre-1970s SGE traffic lights. 39 Ampton Street is the end of a terrace built c1819-23 by Thomas Cubitt and is Grade II listed, listing number 1246998. The three-storey dwelling has a basement and railings, which are included in the listing. 39 Ampton Street is still extant and lies within the Bloomsbury Conservation Area. In contrast, 274 Gray's Inn Road and adjoining buildings (numbers 272-258) were demolished and the area redeveloped in 1983 as Calthorpe Community Garden, still extant in 2021.
