Description
View of the County Hall site and Guildford Barge pub on Belvedere Road, South Bank, by Guildford Street. This view consists of the stretch of Belvedere Road which used to be called Narrow Wall and shows a row of buildings, including the entrance to the Guildford Barge pub on the corner with Guildford Street, and a row of warehouses and factories on the other side. There are pedestrians, and horse-drawn carts on the road. The Guildford Barge is thought to date back to the 1830s. The two-storey building with a row of chimneys may be the Crosse and Blackwell jam and pickle factory. Founded in 1709, this firm was based in Soho, and owned several factories around the country, mainly in the production of pickles and preserves. The area was cleared in 1911 to construct the London County Hall.
