Funeral Invitation
Description
Mr Joseph Hide's printed invitation to the funeral of Stephen Phyler at St Lawrence Jewry, next to Guildhall. The inscription 'Memento Mori' (Latin 'remember (that you have) to die') is the theory and practice of the reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits. The hourglasses and skeletons in the design all serve as reminders to those present at the funeral, intended perhaps to act as a spur to follow a good and meaningful life.
